AstLinux v0.6.7

Custom Linux distro centered around Asterisk, the Open Source PBX.

AstLinux - Introduction

AstLinux is a custom Linux distribution centered around Asterisk, the Open Source PBX. Although Asterisk remains the core focus, other VoIP applications such as OpenSIPS and FreeSWITCH are also available. AstLinux has many features that make it ideal for embedded and commercial Asterisk based solutions. However, it can be easily configured to adapt to nearly any situation.

AstLinux is available for multiple processor architectures. AstLinux has specific images for the AMD Geode LX series of SBC's (single board computers), including those from Soekris Engineering and PC Engines. There are also images targeted for the VIA line of mini-itx boards. The "generic" image runs on pretty much any standard PC.

AstLinux has been designed with running from Compact Flash memory in mind. However, it can also be installed to a regular hard drive like other distributions. AstLinux currently occupies around 40mb of disk space, so any Compact Flash card (or hard drive). While you can install Astlinux on a CF card as small as 128mb, a 512mb or larger card is recommended.

AstLinux is also the premier Asterisk Live CD. The AstLinux ISO image allows you to test without affecting your PC. Try the best Asterisk linux distribution today!

AstLinux 0.6.7 has been released.

Asterisk Native Sounds

Asterisk Native Sounds are a collection of audio prompts for Asterisk. They will improve quality, reduce CPU usage, reduce latency, and (in some cases) eliminate the need for G729 licenses!

The Asterisk Native Sounds are a collection of alternative sounds prompts for Asterisk. Here's how it works. I had Allison Smith (the voice of Asterisk) re-record all of the sound prompts present in Asterisk 1.2. She provided them to me in the best audio format possible. I then converted them into several native Asterisk sound formats. Why would I do all of this?

The default audio prompts provided with Asterisk are in the GSM audio format. GSM audio is nice because it doesn't use much disk space. However, because GSM is a loss-based compression format, there is no way to recover the audio quality lost when they were converted to GSM. Also, because few commercial products (including phones) include support for GSM, you can all but guarantee that Asterisk has to transcode the prompts when a device needs them (to access voicemail, for example).

With the Asterisk Native Sounds collection you will be using audio prompts with the same voice (Allison) as the standard prompts, saying the same thing as the the standard prompts. The only difference is that they are provided in several different audio formats (most with better quality) so that Asterisk doesn't have to transcode them to the format that is being used by the current channel.

AstLinux Development Environment

The AstLinux development environment can be used to create your own customised version of AstLinux.

The AstLinux development environment is currently being developed in a Subversion repository hosted here on astlinux.org. It is based off of Erik Anderson's Buildroot2. Because of this, it inherits all of the nice features of Buildroot including:

Support for multiple architectures
uclibc (smaller binaries and less memory usage)
busybox (of course)

and some unique to AstLinux:

AstLinux kernel configuration
improved Asterisk support
astmanproxy, sox, mini_httpd, and all of the other great software from AstLinux

All in a consistent, easy to configure (make menuconfig) package. Thanks to contributions from members of the community, as of this writing it is almost ready. I don't want to commit to a specific timeframe, part of that is up to you! Check it out today and let me know what you think. Patches are welcome, and frequent helpers can be setup with commit access.
